Color Your World Talk at the Reedsburg Library

 Hi Friends,

I’m excited to invite you to a special talk I’ll be giving at the Reedsburg Public Library as part of their Color Your World Summer Program. I’ll be sharing my passion for the rich and surprising history behind the colors we see in oil paintings—from the earliest cave pigments to the vibrant hues of the Impressionists.

Event Details:

📅 Date: Thursday July 24

⏰ Time: 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM (Presentation with time for your questions afterward)

📍 Location: Reedsburg Public Library, in the Community Room

During the talk, I’ll take you through:

  • The unusual and fascinating origins of some historic pigments—did you know red paint was once made from crushed insects? Or that India yellow came from cows’ urine?
  • The pigments and symbolism used in ancient cave and Egyptian art.
  • A live demonstration where I mix iron oxide pigment I foraged locally with linseed oil, just like the Old Masters did.
  • How color works in painting vs. light, including a fun spinning color wheel demo.
  • The breakthroughs of synthetic pigments like Prussian blue and cadmium colors that changed the way artists paint.
  • The invention of the paint tube and how it made plein air painting possible.
  • How I teach color in my plein air classes to help students see and paint like professionals.

It’ll be a fun and colorful journey through art history, and I’d love to see you there!

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

Looking forward to sharing this with you!

Thank you,

Kyle Martin.
